Multi-Engine Competency Based Instrument Rating

Elevate your flying skills with the Multi‑Engine Instrument Rating at Stapleford Flight Centre—an advanced training programme designed to teach you how to confidently operate twin-engine aircraft under Instrument Flight Rules.

Course Description

The Instrument rating offered at Stapleford is a Competency Based Instrument Rating (CBIR). It is a rating that is traditionally completed in multi-engine aircraft. As such MEP (land) course elements must have been completed before commencing training towards a multi-engine IR and normally after successful completion of the MEP (land) skills test.

The Instrument Rating training is commenced in the ALSIM FNPT2 (DA42) flight simulator. Initially you will learn to control the simulator smoothly and accurately by sole reference to instruments and to accurately track and hold using conventional radio navigation aids and GNSS based systems. A high standard of performance is required before moving on to the next exercises.
You will then learn to fly precision and non-precision instrument approaches with ‘all engines operating’ and go-around procedures. The course will then progress to go-around procedures including the practice of the drills associated with ‘engine failure after take-off’ (EFATO) with subsequent Instrument approaches flown asymmetric. Finally, you will learn how to carry out a standard instrument departure (SID), join and navigate within the airways system, and perform a standard instrument arrival (STAR).
The simulator training will conclude operating the aircraft under ‘limited panel’ conditions. All phases of the course will teach you how to communicate appropriately with ATC.

On reaching the required standard in the simulator phase of training, the course progresses to the DA42 where the skills learnt in the first part of the course are transferred from simulator to aircraft, cumulating to completing full skills test profiles to the required standard.

The final part of the training is a formal pre-test assessment flight, conducted under test conditions, where on successful completion you will be put forward for the skills test with an ‘Authority’ approved examiner.

The multi-engine CBIR course comprises:

  • 45 hours minimum instrument time under instruction
  • 15 hours minimum instrument time under instruction in the DA42 aircraft
  • Circa 2 hours for the skill tests in the DA42 aircraft

The course can be reduced by 10 hours if a CPL has been issued in accordance with ICAO but still includes 15 hours minimum of instruction in the DA42 aircraft.

Further training credit can be applied taking into account prior instrument flight instruction received and experience.

Further information can be obtained from UK CAA and EASA Part-FCL, Annex1, Appendix 6 or contact us for more details.
