Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT)
An aircraft upset is defined as a situation in which an aeroplane unintentionally exceeds the parameters normally experienced during line operations or training.
Course Description
Training includes:
- 5 hours of self-study theoretical knowledge (CBT)
- Pre-flight briefings and post-flight debriefings
- 3 hours* of dual flight instruction in the Slingsby T67 Firefly
*Flight time excludes transit to and from the local training area (approximately 3.6 hours total airborne time)
Course Objectives
The Advanced UPRT course is designed to:
- Develop the ability to recognise and prevent upset conditions
- Teach effective recovery techniques from unusual attitudes
- Improve manual handling and aircraft control
- Build resilience to the physiological and psychological effects of upset scenarios
- Introduce recovery techniques applicable to larger transport-category aircraft
How UPRT Fits Into Your Training
UPRT is introduced at different stages of a professional pilot’s training:
- Basic UPRT – Integrated within CPL and ATPL training courses
- Advanced UPRT – Required before multi-crew and type rating training
This structured approach ensures pilots progressively build the skills required to safely manage increasingly complex flight operations.
Pre-Entry Requirements
Hold a PPL(A)
Hold a valid Class 2 Medical Certificate
Have completed CPL(A) or ATPL(A) theoretical knowledge
