Multi-Engine Piston Rating (MEP)

Having logged 70 hours as pilot-in-command (aeroplanes), a PPL holder may have a Multi-Engine Piston rating (MEP) added to their licence following the completion of specific training. This training will cover normal condition operations, as well as engine failure procedures and asymmetric flight techniques.

Course Description

The MEP (land) Class Rating course instructs you how to operate multi engine piston class of aircraft. The short course is conducted on a Diamond DA42.  It is a short course, where you will be introduced to the management, momentum and control of a heavier and faster aeroplane.

The course will commence with familiarisation and general handling of the aircraft. This will be followed by circuit work, initially with all engines operating, but progressing to engine failure and emergencies. You will be given an appreciation of single engine performance and handling skills required. A Multi-Engine Skills Test will be attempted upon completion of the 6 hour course, which will include a minimum of 3.5 hours of asymmetric flight training. There will also be 7 hours of theoretical training, part of which will be self-study, to reach a standard to pass a multiple-choice theoretical examination.

The training comprises:

  • 6 Hours minimum time under instruction in the Diamond DA42 (Minimum 3.5 hours asymmetric)
  • Approximately 1 Hour for Skills Test in the Diamond DA42
