Instrument Meteorological Conditions / Instrument Rated Restricted IR(R)

Enhance your capability as a private pilot with the Instrument Rating (Restricted) – IR(R). This UK-specific rating is designed to provide an additional safety margin, allowing you to operate more confidently should weather conditions deteriorate from Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) into Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC).

Course Description

The IR(R) is a non-commercial rating aimed at private pilots. It focuses on developing the skills required to maintain control of the aircraft and navigate safely in reduced visibility and instrument conditions.

The course consists of a minimum of 15 hours of dual flight training, supported by theoretical knowledge instruction. Training concludes with a Licence Skill Test (LST) and a multiple-choice theoretical examination.

Please note that the IR(R) is a UK-only rating and cannot be exercised in European airspace.

Entry Requirements

To begin the course, you must:

  • Hold a valid PPL(A)
  • Have completed at least 25 hours total flight time following PPL issue
  • Hold a valid Class 2 medical (or Class 1)

At your first briefing, please bring:

  • PPL licence
  • Logbook
  • Medical certificate
  • Headset

Your instructor will advise if any additional equipment is required.

Progression to Commercial Training

While some students choose to complete the IR(R) before progressing further, those intending to pursue a commercial career should be aware that the Competency-Based Instrument Rating (CBIR) provides a more comprehensive and professional level of training.

In some cases, IR(R) training hours may be credited toward a CBIR; however, this is dependent on individual circumstances.
